The world's bravest selfie? Snap of Palestinian man being chased by Israeli soldiers isn't all it seems. The shocking image rapidly went viral, amassing tens of thousands of views and shares within just one hour of it being posted online.
The viral chase selfie

This selfie appears to show a terrified Palestinian being chased by gun-toting members of the Israeli military.

Unsurprisingly, the shocking image rapidly went viral, amassing tens of thousands of views and shares within just one hour of it being posted online.

However, a number of eagle-eyed viewers - and fans of Middle Eastern rap music - quickly identified the selfie-snapper as hip-hop star Tamer Nafar.

In addition, they swiftly fingered the two Israeli as being Suhell Nafar and Mahmoud Jreri, Tamer's bandmates in DAM, aka Da Arabian MCs.

And it transpires that the selfie was designed to promote their music.

Is this the stupidest selfie ever? 'GCSE exam picture' goes viral

Formed in the 1990s, the group claims to be the first Palestinian hip-hop crew.

When asked whether the picture was a fake, a DAM representative said they did not want to be quoted on record because they were "enjoying watching the reaction the photo is generating online".

It is not the band's first brush with controversy.

In 2012, their video for 'If I Could Go Back in Time' dealt with the issue of honour killings of women, a subject rarely discussed in mainstream pop culture.

The video was both applauded and condemned within Palestinian society.

Many congratulated the rappers for drawing attention to the topic, while others criticised them for making simplistic caricatures of Arab social issues.
