Garena on LGBT issue

After sparking worldwide outrage for limiting the number of LGBT women who can compete in its all-female Iron Solari League of Legends tournament, Garena Philippines has announced its complete withdrawal of the controversial gender-based restriction.

The new ruling, released Wednesday, January 4, states that any player who self-identifies as a female will be allowed to participate in the Iron Solari League, a monthly tournament created to promote diversity within the video gaming community.

Garena Philippines’ original guidelines, dated January 3, were to allow each team a maximum of one LGBT player due to concerns that LGBT participants “may probably have some unfair advantage.” Teams who did not follow the rule were to be hit with a one-year ban from all Garena-organized events.

News of the contentious ruling quickly spread like wildfire within the online community, garnering reactions from netizens and concerned parties worldwide - including League of Legends developer Riot Games, who responded to Garena Philippines’ policy on Twitter.

“LGBT players are welcome at official LoL tourneys. We're working with partners to ensure consistency with our values across all regions,” Riot Games said.

Along with the new tournament ruling, Garena Philippines released a statement apologizing for any offense it may have caused to the LGBT and gaming communities.

“Our original intent when we put together this tournament was to promote diversity in the competitive gaming community,” the game publisher said.

“Hence, we are grateful to our players who have consistently provided their feedback to help us learn and improve as we strive to develop an inclusive gaming environment for all. We’ll also be keeping our promise of having an open dialogue with all parties as we plan this and future events.”
